Aberdeen Artists' Society

While the founding of the Aberdeen Artists’ Society goes back as far as 1827 when celebrities like artist James Giles and architect Archibald Simpson were involved, the AAS as we know it now dates from 1958 when the late Ian Fleming was Head of Gray’s School of Art.

The Society’s annual exhibition has helped create Aberdeen’s reputation as a cultural centre. Artists from all over the country submit around 8 to 900 works in 2 and 3 dimensions, but only about one third is selected. One of the main attractions of the exhibition is the Awards scheme offered by Shell U.K. Limited, the main sponsors for more than 20 years. Currently the fund stands at £7000 with £5000 for the Premier Award. Shell U.K. Limited also invites judges of international reputation to select the winners. Shell funds the production of a colour catalogue and the proceeds from the sale of these goes towards buying works for display in Aberdeen and Grampian hospitals.

Museums Association

The Museums Association (MA) is the oldest museums association in the world. It was set up by a small group of museums in 1889 to look after the interests of museums and galleries.

Today, it is still entirely independent of government and is funded by its membership, which is made of up individual museum professionals, institutions and corporate members. The MA now has approximately 5,000 individual members, 600 institutional members and 250 corporate members. The MA provides information through its web site and publications, lobbies government and sets ethical standards through its policy department, and offers a comprehensive professional development programme for members wishing to further their careers in museums and galleries.

In addition to this, the MA runs a series of events around museum issues, and holds an annual conference which focuses on current issues and policies affecting museums and galleries.
